Impiety: The Impious Crusade (EP 2013)

Stealing

The esteemed Metallattorney should be writing this review. He’s written about them several times. In 2009 he wrote, “Impiety has been one of the most extreme, powerful bands in underground metal for years.” And I pretty much operate on the assumption that he wants to hear everything from Hells Headbangers. Because it’s completely within his realm of expertise, and he’s expressed such admiration for them, first dibs on anything from Impiety should have, by all rights, gone to Metallattorney.

I guess he just did too good a job at selling them. He hasn’t sold me a lemon for the better part of a decade, and Impiety is no exception to that winning streak.

So! Let me pilfer extensively from what the expert has said.
Impiety sounds like they would have been at home in the South American black/thrash scene in the 1980's along with Sarcofago, Vulcano, and Holocausto, or even in the Australian "war metal" scene along with Bestial Warlust, Abominator, and Deströyer 666. They have that same raw and filthy vibe to them. Their music is all about aggression, plain and simple. It's chaotic noise and there never really is a respite in an Impiety album.
From the Behemoth-esque opening salvo where they do that awesome guitar squelching thing (is there a name for that?) to the raunchy cover at the end, it’s true. This is unrelenting. So let's lift some more to see what else we can learn:
An Impiety album is more like a destructive event than a listening experience. They leave the listener dumbfounded, mouth-agape, wondering what the hell just happened. The music is like tornado ripping through the listener's head and leaving no survivors.

Impiety is not an easy band to listen to, far from it actually, but if one wants metal that is extremely aggressive and destructive, look no further than Impiety.
Yeah, I stole this review, in a couple of ways. It’s my not-so-subtle way of telling you that you should go buy The Impious Crusade, because it will rip through your head leaving no survivors, and go read Metallattorney, because when he’s passionate about something you can rely on that.

The Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars

  1. Hey man, appreciate the kind words. I will concur, Impiety is indeed awesome. I owe you a bunch of reviews and will be getting around to them soon. Unfortunately with my new public defender position things have been pretty hectic. There have been a ton of felonies up here.

  2. That's a great title for a new Emmure album: Public Defender. First single "A Ton of Felonies".
