Atheist: Jupiter (2010)

Review

Technical thrash/death metal legends Atheist have joined the reunion bandwagon, releasing their first full-length in over 17 years, Jupiter.

Their sound is somewhat of a mix between early Pestilence (think Spheres) and Cynic, with some of the chaoticism of Cephalic Carnage. The vocals especially sound like Pestilence, with that harsh nasally sound. The instruments are all played with the precision appropriate to a technical band, and they mix things up constantly.

The problem is, much of this just sounds like disjointed noodling. I'm a huge fan of technical death metal, but that's when it's done well. These songs don't have the catchiness or emotional impact of Decrepit Birth, the undeniable beauty of Cynic, or the inexplicable flow of Cephalic Carnage. It just seems like most of it's jumbled together.

This is not to say it's all bad. The first half of the album is OK (not much of it will stay with you, though). But when the album is only a half hour long, it's kind of insulting to have this much filler.

The Verdict: Atheist is one band that should have stayed broken up, although I'm sure their growing legend over the years will make Jupiter a big cash-in. I give the album 2.5 out of 5 stars.

  1. You should keep pushing pencils and chasing ambulances. Just the fact that you use the word Heavy Metal in your profile says it all!
Kind of insulting to have to be able to review this album.

  2. I have no idea what you're trying to say in the second two sentences there . . . . I presume you're trying to say you disagree. If so, I appreciate your comment. If not, I wish you'd clarify.

  3. That's disappointing that you did not care for this one much. I still plan to check it out though.

  4. I don't know. Maybe I'm getting too picky with my tech-death?
