Raccoon

I saw a raccoon last night on city campus. He was happily munching on garbage near a busy sidewalk, apparently not bothered by the proximity of many two-legged types. He let me get about ten feet from him (Lord knows where he got all those feet) before he calmly put a bit more distance between us. I’ve never seen a living raccoon before, as far as I can remember. It was fascinating.

  1. You've never seen a live racoon? You really don't pay attention when you drive at night. There are tons of them between Pierce and Norfolk.

  2. Our daughter and her family live in a residential area in the suburbs of Chicago. For the time being, they are keeping their kitty outside. The cat food is on their porch.

One night recently a huge raccoon ventured onto the porch and helped itself to the cat food. The family watched from behind their glass storm door as the raccoon munched away fully aware that they were within 5 feet of him. It didn't bother him one bit.

One morning at twilight, my daughter happened to get up for some reason. She looked outside and there was the gigantic buck with big antlers trailing across her front lawn and heading for the school yard across the street.

These sightings are such a treat to city dwellers.

  3. Oh you city dwellers. It's nice to see people appreceate the little bandits. We have a little creek and some woods on our property. I put stuff in my compost pile for all the little critters from the woods. A lot of people here will kill racoons or trap them & move them. I feed them & have never had a problem w/them. They come out at night so are no problem. I put all the food stuff in the compost so they never get in the garbage. Some people say they will kill cats & small dogs. I think only when attacked. We saw one of our cats slap one for getting in the cat food. The racoon just shook his head & lumbered on. They are reletively peaceful. I did hear a story about a big racoon drowning a hound dog that had chased it into a stream. Might be a tall tale.

  4. "You city dwellers." Heh. I'm from Nebraska, in Pierce, a town of 1,700. You'd know I'm from the country if you looked back through some of my old photography posts. I think the reason I've never seen a live raccoon is because they only come out at night and I've never gone hunting for them. I see plenty of dead ones on the side of the road though.

  5. Big brother, who are you by the way? I assume you're someone I've met.

  6. Who do you think would call themselves "Big Brother"? Your big (large) brother.

  7. Ah, so by "big" you mean "larger" rather than "older." I see. Excellent. I hope you appreciate that I now allow anonymous posting.
